SHELTER
A client in visible distress is refusing to leave common space and getting louder.
Practical crisis response training
SAFER is practical crisis response training for workers who weren’t hired for crisis work — but face it anyway.
Built from thousands of real encounters. Designed for the moments that matter.
Built from nearly two decades of frontline experience.

SAFER was pivotal in how our staff responded. It was truly the most impactful training we did.
Built for the realities of frontline work.
A clear, repeatable framework your staff can use.
Training based on the situations your team actually faces.
More confidence, better decisions, and a safer workplace.
An agitated client at the front desk. A guest who won't leave. A coworker frozen in the middle of something escalating fast.
These moments don't go to the people who were hired for them — they go to whoever is closest. And most of the time, that person has no framework for what to do next.
Instinct isn't enough. Improvisation is where incidents happen.
A client in visible distress is refusing to leave common space and getting louder.
A customer is escalating at the register and staff don't know when to call for help.
Two participants move from arguing to physical. Staff freeze.
A guest is unresponsive in a room. The housekeeper who found them has no protocol.
These aren't edge cases. They're Tuesday. SAFER gives your staff a process for all of them.
The SAFER Framework
Front-line staff can actually remember under pressure — built from real encounters, not a classroom. It doesn't just build awareness. It builds muscle memory.
Recognize early warning signs before situations escalate.
Evaluate risk and make safer decisions as situations change.
Manage your own response and maintain control under pressure. You can't de-escalate from a dysregulated state.
Communicate effectively, set limits, and coordinate with your team.
Document, debrief, and learn from difficult incidents.
Review isn’t an afterthought. It’s part of the response.

About the facilitator
SAFER wasn't designed in a classroom. It was built by Lucas Goltz — Downtown Halifax's Street Navigator — through thousands of real encounters with people in crisis. Tent encampments in winter. Overdose response during COVID-19. Drop-in centres in Vancouver and Victoria where something could go wrong at any moment.
That experience is what this framework is made of. Not theory. Real decisions, real pressure, real outcomes.
Lucas's work has been featured by CBC, Global News, and CTV News.
In their words
Lucas tailored SAFER to our youth engagement work, making the training directly relevant and practical for our team... Several youth at our summer camps experienced significant distress, including one severe incident. SAFER was pivotal in how our staff responded. It was truly the most impactful training we did. Whether we have returning staff or not, I’ll be booking Lucas again.
We've been fortunate to work alongside Lucas Goltz for the past three years, and that partnership made bringing him in to deliver SAFER Crisis Response Training a natural next step. Our team left the training feeling more confident and equipped to respond to crisis moments with compassion — I have full confidence in what Lucas has built, and I'd encourage any organization to bring him in.
SAFER provided practical, relevant training tailored to the situations our team encounters every day. The session helped newer employees build confidence while giving senior staff a valuable refresher and an opportunity to share their experience. I would recommend SAFER to organizations looking to strengthen their team’s ability to respond confidently and consistently in challenging client situations.
As someone who’s worked with marginalized people on the street level for over 10 years, I thought the SAFER training was excellent. The role-playing and interactive scenarios were especially helpful because they took the concepts beyond theory and into real-life situations. I’d highly recommend this training to anyone serving in missions, soup kitchens, shelters, or other volunteer roles working with vulnerable people.
